1. Can you share with us your business concept?
I (Janson) used to run a bar and I realised how painful it is to do operations planning! Counting work hours is a nightmare -whether it is manually via Whatsapp, Excel or biometrics. Later, we realised this problem is not just faced by the F&B industry but many of our favourite brick and mortar stores!
Together with my fellow co-founders and founding team (Eugene, Jeremy, Kai Yi and Jia Yi), we created StaffAny to tackle this. StaffAny basically digitizes and simplifies all the manual processes in scheduling and consolidating of timesheets. You don’t just get more time but also greater transparency and connectivity in your workforce.
2. Why did you join ideasinc 2018? What was the motivation behind joining?
I think as a start-up, the exposure we can get at an early stage is really valuable. We saw the potential of what ideasinc could provide us, whether it is the training, refining of our solution, expert mentorship or even being in a community of like-minded people. We also saw it as a huge opportunity for us to hear fresh external perspectives - so it has definitely played a part in where we are today.
3. What did you gain from your experience with ideasinc?
ideasinc, being an accelerator - it accelerated learning and growth! We had lots of support not only from the mentors in the programme but even from the other start-ups. We still hang out with many of our batchmates!
4. What is your advice to prospective participants of ideasinc and also budding start-ups/entrepreneurs?
Definitely give it a shot! And throwing in one more tip - go in with an open mind. Your assumptions might get challenged and that is not always a bad thing. There is something to learn from every experience and conversation you have.
Hopefully, this is not too cliched, but hustle well! - There is a vast sea of knowledge (and good knowledge!) out there but it is important to be able to pick out what is most relevant and applicable to your business and customers. Learning from other start-ups journeys has also been really helpful, both to know that you are not alone and we could learn certain new lessons from those who have walked the path before us.
5. How has the current COVID-19 situation impacted/ or provided opportunities for your company?
COVID-19 significantly affected our then users’ day-to-day operations and so, we really had to adapt quickly. For our current users, it was to provide value to them even as they adjust to the ever-changing new normal. At the same time, we started looking at the new concerns COVID-19 surfaced for businesses. New pain points actually opened up opportunities in which StaffAny could come in to provide value - specifically in compliance. Hence, we built a new mobile tool CICO (Clock-In, Clock-Out) to help SMEs with time & attendance integrated with SafeEntry.
